News From The Land…

The hot weather continues with a few short bursts of much needed rainfall but we are officially in a drought in parts of the UK. In the past few weeks, we have had our grass cut and baled and our busy set up period continues with construction activity around the site.

Other Activities:

The weather cooled for our first community Roundhouse Build Camp #1 in July which saw the inner henge construction. It looks great! This was the result of many hands stripping bark, sawing, chiselling and positioning the timber logs to create what will become a stunning community building.

Our next Roundhouse Build Camp runs from 6th to 11th August. This time a full 5-days immersive build experience led by Adrian Leaman from Wholewoods. Only £60 including optional 5-night camping on site, breakfast, lunch and BBQ + refreshments. A few spaces left – book here if you’d like to join.

The workshop roof frame has been built to link the storage containers, and create undercover woodworking space. This will also provide essential rainwater capture (when it eventually rains!). Our volunteers have been working hard to complete the polytunnel which has been skinned and netted ready to be used for growing and as an indoor meeting space.

Observing the natural surroundings is part of our “Remembering Our Place In Nature” ethos, and the spurt in hedgerow growth adjacent to the horsetail demonstrates their symbiotic relationship. New species of damselfly were spotted among the multitudes of mites, spiders, butterflies and beetles as biodiversity on site continues to astound and amaze.

The Yurt carpet has been fitted creating a welcoming space for groups to hire. We will soon be offering hire options. Watch this space!

One of our first ever workshops in the yurt will be a Create & Connect Nature Workshop facilitated by Polly Hall on Saturday 6th September. Book via Eventbrite here.

We invited visitors to walk the land as part of the Somerset Food Trail on Sunday 27th July. There will be more opportunities to visit Bridie’s Farm in the autumn at our Skill Share Open Weekend on 20th/21st September please get in touch. SHOUT OUT to market traders, local makers, growers, craftspeople who would like a pitch – please get in touch as soon as possible.

Lammas Thoughts

Ways to celebrate Lammas:

  • Create a mandala or shrine to celebrate the harvest season.
  • Bake bread, cakes and biscuits to share.
  • Collect fruits of the season from the hedgerows.
  • Fill a basket of abundance. Put in your own gift and take out something else which someone has put in.

Coming Up Soon

  • Ever wanted to build a roundhouse! We are running our second community roundhouse build camp at Bridie’s Farm. Details here – spaces still available. Camp #2 from 6th – 11th August.
  • Skill Share Open Weekend – collaborative event with local food growers, heritage crafts, artisan market, tour and talk at Bridie’s Farm – 20th – 21st September.

We welcome your thoughts, input and positive energy as we continue to build this ground-enhancing project for and with the community. Contact us here.
